Which Grass Should You Put in Your Georgia Yard: Zoysia, Bermuda, or Fescue?

Most Absolute Green customers already have a lawn. We treat Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, and Fescue from Buford. If you are planting, replacing, or arguing with a builder about seed vs sod, the grass type still matters: sun, shade, winter color, and how we schedule weed control and fertilizer.

Start with sun and how you use the yard

• Full sun most of the day: Bermuda is the usual North Georgia choice. It spreads, fills thin spots, and likes heat.

• Part shade: Zoysia often holds up better than Bermuda when trees take part of the day. Deep shade is still a problem for all three.

• Want green in winter: Fescue stays green in the cool months. Bermuda and Zoysia go dormant and brown after frost.

• Heavy summer use: Bermuda recovers fastest. Zoysia is dense but slower to fill. Fescue hates Georgia summers and thins unless you overseed every fall.

Bermuda

Warm-season. Most of our customers have Bermuda. It spreads with runners, so it can knit thin spots if it has sun and a fertilizer program. It greens in late spring, thrives in summer heat, and turns brown in winter. That brown lawn is dormant, not dead — do not kill it with a non-selective winter spray.

Mow it shorter than fescue. Scalp in early spring before green-up. Weed control timing is built around pre-emergent and the summer annuals that invade thin Bermuda. Read Bermuda grass facts and mowing heights.

Fescue

Cool-season. It can stay green in winter when Bermuda is brown. It does not like our summers. A significant share of fescue dies in the heat, so the lawn needs aeration and overseeding every fall (usually late September–October, around 75 degrees) if you want it to stay thick.

Never scalp fescue. Keep it tall in summer, about 5 inches, so the canopy shades the soil. Weed control and fertilizer follow a cool-season calendar, not a Bermuda summer mix.

Centipede shows up on some North Georgia properties too. We treat it as a warm-season grass on its own schedule, similar in season to Bermuda and Zoysia, not fescue.
