Is October Too Late to Overseed Fescue in North Georgia?
Early October is still fescue season around Buford. Tall fescue thins in a Georgia summer. The time to put seed down is after days have cooled to about 75 degrees, usually late September through mid-October.
If you are in that window and you can water the new seed, it is not too late. Call (404) 376-9554 or request a quote for aeration and overseeding.
When to stop
After about mid-October, seed is a poor bet. Seedlings need a few mild weeks to root before nights stay cold. Seed spread in November mostly sits there, or it germinates and dies.
If you missed the window, keep the fescue you have and plan the overseed for next fall. Do not keep adding seed through winter.
What to do while the window is open
• Aerate first so the seed reaches soil. See core aeration.
• Seed after the cores. That is the fescue overseed we schedule in this window.
• Water the seedlings a few minutes about three times a day until they are a couple of inches tall, then taper toward about 1 inch of water a week. Details are in the irrigation guide.
Bermuda and Zoysia are on a different calendar
This timing is for fescue. Bermuda and Zoysia are warm-season grasses. Spreading fescue seed into Bermuda can give a temporary winter green, but it does not thicken the Bermuda.
Those lawns want summer aeration and a weed control and fertilizer program. Background: Bermuda and Zoysia.
Winter clumps of light-green Poa annua are a weed, not fescue filling in.
